Most calorie calculators apply a single MET value to "walking" and multiply by time, which means the load on your back changes nothing at all in the answer. That is obviously wrong, and it is why rucking calculators tend to disagree with each other by a factor of two.
This one uses the Pandolf load-carriage equation, which was developed for military load-carriage research and takes bodyweight, carried load, speed, grade and terrain as separate inputs. It is still an estimate, but the weight on your back actually moves the number.
What the equation does and does not account for
The Pandolf equation estimates metabolic rate in watts from five things: your mass, the mass you are carrying, walking speed, grade, and a terrain factor for how much energy the surface itself costs. Carried load appears in its own terms, which is exactly why a load-aware estimate differs from a MET table.
What it does not model well: downhill sections, where the original equation is known to overestimate; very slow walking under heavy load; and individual efficiency, which varies more between people than most calculators admit. It also cannot know your fitness, so treat the output as a comparison tool — this route against that route — rather than as a precise figure to eat back.
If the load you entered is above roughly a third of your bodyweight, the estimate gets less reliable and so does your form. Before going heavier, read what makes a pack ruckable — at those weights, how the load sits matters more than how much of it there is.
Common questions
Why is this number lower than the one my watch gives me?
Wrist devices estimate energy expenditure from heart rate and movement, and they have no idea you are carrying weight. They tend to read a loaded walk as a harder unloaded walk, which inflates the figure. This calculator works from the mechanics instead — your mass, the load, the speed and the grade — so it will usually land lower and be less flattering. Treat either number as a rough estimate, and compare it against itself over time rather than against another device.
Does carrying weight really burn that much more?
More, but less than the internet suggests. Adding twenty pounds to a moderate walk typically raises energy cost by something in the region of ten to twenty percent, not double. The reason to ruck is what it does to your conditioning, your posture under load and your bone loading over months, not the calorie column. If the calorie number is the whole reason you are considering it, walking for longer is the simpler answer.
What grade should I enter if my route rolls up and down?
Use the average grade over the whole route, not the steepest hill. A route that climbs 300 feet over three miles averages roughly two percent, even if one section feels far steeper. Descending costs energy too, but much less than climbing, and the equation this uses does not model it well — so treat a very hilly route as an underestimate.
